The new building provides instructional and research space for the University’s undergraduate science programs. The three-story Compton Science Center occupies one of the most important sites on the campus – the nexus between the older upper quadrangle of historic academic and residential halls and the lower campus of contemporary larger academic buildings. The scale of the building is broken down to related to the existing structures on campus. The materials and architectural expression form a bridge between the traditional older buildings on the upper quad and the more contemporary buildings on the lower campus. The building contains state of the art instructional labs, a greenhouse, faculty offices and general classroom space for the Departments of Biology, Chemistry and Physics and Engineering. The classrooms include three large, tiered lecture halls equipped with sophisticated audio-visual and telecommunications features.
