Claymont Regional Transportation Center
Delaware Department of Transportation

The Delaware Transit Corporation (DTC) through the Delaware Department of Transportation (DelDOT)  sponsored a project that provides high-quality, innovative, and cost-effective state-of-the-art regional transportation center. This center supports SEPTA Regional Rail, and DART Bus transit services for Northern Delaware and the surrounding region. JMT Architecture is lead Architect and engineer of record for the Wagman-JMT Design Build Team.

The Transportation Center design honors the historical themes of the Greater Claymont Area including the project site’s history as a Steel Manufacturing Plant, the architectural themes from adjacent residential structures, and the classical train station look and feel consistent with the Joseph R. Biden station in Wilmington.

The project details include two new 630’ high level canopy covered station platforms, integrating the train station into the parking garage with a covered pedestrian bridge to cross the tracks allowing access between the garage to both northbound and southbound rail lines, a covered pedestrian walkway sheltering patrons between the station, bus service and bike storage, ADA accessible stair towers with elevators, bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure, new signalized intersection and access road from US 13, dedicated bus loop to separate buses from patron vehicles, 870 parking spaces between surface lots and a garage parking structure, station elements including restrooms, waiting area, public art, patron electric car charging stations and real-time information, and provisions for future in route electric bus charging.

The Claymont Regional Transportation Center is a true multi-modal facility providing connections between commuter rail, bus transit, passenger vehicles and a shared use facility for bikes and pedestrians with connection to the East Coast Greenway. Coordination with the surrounding transit-oriented development  places Claymont as a leading sustainable livable community.

Just recently the Harris B. McDowell, III Transportation Center in Claymont, Delaware won the best Quality of Life/Community Development Award for the medium size project for the NASTO Region at the Regional 2024 America’s Transportation Awards.
