Boyds Corner Road Maintenance Yard
The Delaware Department of Transportation (DelDOT) needed a maintenance yard to service the SR 1 and US 301 highways in New Castle County, DE. The facility would support maintenance crew administration and operations, vehicle maintenance, and staging for road crew maintenance teams.
JMT provided comprehensive planning, design, construction management, inspection, and administration services for the project. The final design highlights the breadth of our expertise, incorporating architecture; MEP, geotechnical, and civil engineering; water/wastewater; traffic/highway design; and surveying.
To meet DelDOT’s needs, the new facility features an above-ground fueling station and storage, a crew quarters and operations building, a maintenance building, a salt barn, a wash pad, and three truck sheds. The facility also meets LEED Silver standards for sustainability and incorporates system hardening and redundancy to support 24/7 critical needs operations.
Our team successfully navigated several challenges that emerged during construction.
The COVID-19 pandemic created supply chain delays for necessary materials and equipment, jeopardizing the project schedule. JMT staff worked with the contractor’s list of critical delivery items to expedite submittal reviews and facilitate early orders, which prevented schedule impacts.
Construction was further complicated when one of the pre-engineered metal buildings differed from the design. Our team collaborated with the contractor to adjust the foundations and overhead crane coordination to avoid issues between suppliers. We also worked with the owner to modify the design during construction to accommodate organizational program revisions while avoiding impacts to the equipment and materials the contractor had already procured.
JMT coordinated closely with all project stakeholders to successfully navigate challenges and manage the phased scheduling for the facility’s construction to ensure the project was completed on time.
